Scrap Chopper
Industry: Steel Pipe Manufacturing
Situation: When manufacturing steel pipe, large sheets of steel are cut to specific widths before they are rolled and fused into single pipes.
During the cutting process, strips of scrap steel have to be disposed of, but the scrap bins are too small to hold the pieces of scrap.
Because of this problem, overly high material handling and labour costs are incurred. In order to increase profitability, a large steel pipe manufacturer contacted DynaIndustrial to design and build a machine to chop the scrap steel into pieces small enough to fit in their scrap bins.
Challenges:
- To design and manufacture a Scrap Chopper for steel that operates
continuously in the demanding environment of a steel pipe production line, and is easy to service. - To select materials that perform in the high temperature
environment of steel production. - To determine the optimal cutting method and design an energy
efficient, high powered, system to drive the cutters. - To design the chopper to manage any size of scrap steel coming
off of the production line. - To manufacture a Scrap Steel Chopper robust enough to operate
steadily at high speeds, under heavy abuse, and still maintain cutting quality.
Solution: DynaIndustrial engineers analyzed our customer's Steel Pipe production line to determine the operating conditions and correct placement of the Scrap Steel Chopper. We then designed and manufactured an advanced dual rotation cutter with angular blades to increase load capacity. To do so required innovatively configuring bearings, shafts and gearboxes, and designing the gear ratios to optimize throughput per second. Also, considering the heavy abuse, we built the sheer knives to be easily accessible and replaceable, to keep them sharp and extend the lifespan of the Scrap Steel Chopper.
Results:
- Steel Scrap Chopper has been intensively tested and is exceeding expectations.
- DynaIndustrial is currently manufacturing final production units
to be installed in our customers Steel Pipe manufacturing facility.
